The MT6816 magnetic encoder chip is a new-generation high-speed, high-precision angle encoder chip. It is primarily used in brushless DC motor control, servo motor control, and closed-loop stepper motor control. Because the chip only responds to changes in the direction of a magnetic field parallel to the chip surface, the MT6816 has low tolerances for machining errors in the magnet itself and the distance between the magnet and the chip.

The MT6816 has a wide operating temperature range, operating from -40°C to 125°C, significantly broadening its application scenarios. The MT6816 provides an incremental ABZ output interface to replace traditional photoelectric encoders, with a maximum resolution of 1024 pulses/revolution or 4096 steps/revolution. It also provides incremental UVW signals, programmable from 1 to 16 pole pairs, to replace Hall effects.

The MT6816 provides a 3-wire or 4-wire SPI interface for a host computer or MCU to read the chip's internal 14-bit absolute angle value. A single-wire PWM output also provides 12-bit absolute angle data.

IIC Communications:

The JP1 interface is an IIC communication interface.

When communicating with IIC, the VDD and Z short circuits of JP2 need to be raised.

ABZ Newsletter:

JP2 is the ABZ communication port. By default, AB=256 and Z=4.

Note: The MODE of JP1 needs to be short-circuited and grounded to GND.

PWM output:

JP3 is a PWM output, and the default PWM frequency is: 994.4.

The MODE and GND of JP1 need to be short-circuited and lowered.

SSI communication:

JP2 can achieve SSI communication. The wiring is as follows:

MT6816 chip features

MT6816 is the third-generation magnetic Angle encoder chip launched by MagnTek. It achieves absolute Angle measurement from 0 to 360° based on anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) technology and proprietary signal processing technology. This chip consists of a pair of AMR Wheatstone Bridges and a signal processing ASIC circuit. As the magnetic field parallel to the chip surface rotates, the chip will output the corresponding encoded Angle signal, with a signal delay as low as within 2us. Meanwhile, users can also read the Angle data calculated internally by the chip through the high-speed SPI interface.

Compared with traditional Hall sensors, AMR Angle sensors operate in the saturation zone, reducing the requirement for magnetic fields and making installation easier for customers. MT6816 is available in SOP-8 packaging and is widely applicable to various consumer and industrial fields such as motor position feedback control and rotation control.

The JP1 interface is an ABZ communication interface. By default, AB=1024 and Z=4.

When communicating with ABZ, if MTP programming is not required, the HVPP pin needs to be short-circuited to GND.

SPI communication:

JP2 is a four-wire SPI communication port, through which MTP programming of the chip can be carried out.

PWM output:

JP3 is a PWM output, and the default PWM frequency is: 971.

UVW communication:

The W/Z, V/B, and U/A pins are multiplexed and cannot be used simultaneously.
